The Mary Lou Williams Collective: Zodiac Suite: Revisited

Mary Lou Williams the composer was as extraordinary as the Williams the player, effortlessly bridging and synthesizing stride, swing, bop, the avant-garde, astrology, Catholicism, and who-knows-what else into all of her work and making all of it her own. Here, Geri Allen, another under-rated woman jazz pianist (is that redundant? Of course it is), with marvelously sympathetic accompaniment, interprets Williams' best-known work, originally recorded for Folkways in 1945.
Allen is probably every bit Williams' equal as a player, but it's the immutable quality of Williams' compositions that stands out here. These are great, timeless songs.
Acquired from eMusic some time ago, so discographical information is scarce. If you can fill in any of the many blanks, please do so. And if you like this, the rest of Allen's catalog is every bit as good. Go buy some of it.
