James Spaulding: Blues Nexus

Spaulding came of age in a long-ago Chicago where an up-and-coming musician could play on a Jerry Butler session and a half dozen Sun Ra recordings in the same year. As a regular Blue Note sideman in the sixties, Spaulding shined on both straight-ahead and more challenging sessions by Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Grant Green, Sam Rivers, Lee Morgan and many more, but never led a session of his own for the label.
Blues Nexus, recorded for Muse in 1993, doesn't hold a ton of surprises, but affords plenty of pleasure, with Spaulding and a crew of well-seasoned players at the top of their games and a program of not-quite standards composed by other post-bop veterans.
