Joe Fonda • Carlo Morena • Jeff Hirshfield: What We're Hearing (1994(

I went to hear a different incarnation of this trio (with Bob Gulotti on drums) a couple of years ago expecting... well, I don't know what I was expecting, exactly. But it wasn't anything like this: no brimstone, but plenty of fire in a straight-forward modernist piano-trio context. Morena, who I'd never heard (or even heard of) elsewhere, is a strong, melodic player and fine composer. Fonda in this situation is a revelation. And the decision to cover Atilla Zoller's "When It's Time" is always a wise one.

Joe Fonda - bass
Carlo Morena - piano
Jeff Hirshfield - drums

1. My Blues (Joe Fonda) 13:36
2. Mars Bars (Michael Musillami) 8:22
3. When It's Time (Atilla Zoller) 10:04
4. Begin (Carlo Morena) 7:06
5. Love You, Too (Carlo Morena) 10:18
6. Persuasions (Carlo Morena) 6:30
7. You Stepped Out Of A Dream (Nacio Herb Brown) 4:31

Recorded 1994 Brooklyn, NY

Used to go to listen to Morena when he dropped in Spain at the end of the 80´s. Agree with the Zoller's piece, he is a player I admire deeply. Thanks.

thanks a lot, festoonic, for that wealth and variety in sharings, some of them I was curious about, and others (originally!) not.
thanks again.
